Chronicle of an Invisible Theft at Kim Bảo

At the end of each year, Marc, the manager of the Vietnamese jewellery house Kim Bảo, conducts a thorough stock audit. This year, a shocking discovery has been made: nearly 4 kilograms of gold are missing. This represents a significant loss. The safe remains intact, access to it is restricted, and no alerts were triggered.

The Inner Circle: Marc reviews the list of individuals authorized to access the safe, which includes two senior artisans, his foreman, and himself. None have any disputes; all are long-serving employees. However, access is granted via an RFID badge, a standalone system considered reliable but lacking access logs and direct video surveillance of the area.

Invisible Flaws: An external security audit has been ordered. The verdict is clear: the access control system is outdated. The absence of two-factor authentication, reliable logging, and direct video surveillance presents a significant vulnerability. A forgotten badge is all that is needed to enter the safe room undetected.

Complicit Silences: News of the theft creates unease among the staff. Suspicion brews. The foreman becomes evasive, citing burnout. No one confesses, and no one denies. The robbery, although unclaimed, becomes a silent taboo.

The Fatal Error: One morning, an artisan forgets his badge. Marc, aided by the security expert, conducts a test: access to the safe in under two minutes. No beeps, no alerts, no video. The truth is clear: the technology designed to protect the gold was inadequate.

The Crisis: Without evidence, Marc cannot accuse anyone. He temporarily shuts down the workshop for "technical maintenance." Rumors spread, clients grow uneasy, and suppliers worry. Kim Bảo's once sterling reputation begins to falter.

Shock Resistance: Marc retaliates with biometric badges, redundant cameras, audio recording in sensitive areas, encrypted access logs, and quarterly audits. A new stringent security regulation has been signed by all parties. A zero-tolerance policy is in place.

Lessons Learned: The thief is never identified, yet the company experiences no further incidents. The shock revealed the flaws, the crisis tested the organisation, and transformation rebuilt trust. Marc understands that in matters of security, silence is never golden.
